Kazakhstan's ruling Amanat party said it would merge into the newly registered Adilet party ahead of August parliamentary elections, Reuters reported on June 12. Amanat, formerly Nur Otan, has dominated Kazakhstan's legislature since its creation under former President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 1999, while Adilet was created two months ago by former presidential administration officials.

Adilet, which includes Tokayev's niece and senior former presidential administration officials in its governing body, moved from launch to registration to absorption of the ruling party within weeks, while independent political forces in Kazakhstan have struggled for years to obtain registration. The merger comes as Kazakhstan prepares to replace its two-chamber Parliament with a new unicameral Kurultai following constitutional changes approved in March.
