Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's open letter proposing a personal meeting and ceasefire, saying he saw no point in a meeting without comprehensive, long-lasting agreements, TASS reported on June 5. Putin added that Russia does not want another Minsk-style arrangement, referencing the agreements that granted pro-Russian, rebel-controlled areas of Ukraine's Donbas region limited self-rule, and repeatedly referenced the August 2025 U.S.-Russia summit in Anchorage, Alaska.
Putin's comments followed his June 4 remarks to foreign media editors in St. Petersburg, where he said U.S. President Donald Trump's peace proposals could form the basis for an agreement if Ukraine accepted compromises discussed at the Anchorage summit. The exchange also came after politically embarrassing Ukrainian strikes on a St. Petersburg oil terminal and Kronstadt naval base, where Ukrainian forces reportedly hit the Russian Baltic Fleet's Boykiy corvette.
