Algeria's, Niger's and Nigeria's ministers of petroleum oversaw the start of construction works for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, or TSGP, in Algeria's Adrar region, Jeune Afrique reported on June 5. Niger's Minister for Petroleum Hamadou Tini said construction of the Nigerien section of the pipeline would begin in early 2027.
The TSGP was initially proposed in the 1970s and faced several failed project relaunches, with the latest attempt beginning in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Algeria, Niger and Nigeria signed several agreements to advance the TSGP project in 2025, but these plans stalled following a downturn in relations between Niger and Algeria amid escalating tensions between Algeria and Mali, a closer partner to Niger's junta. However, thawing ties between the two countries saw Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Nigerien junta leader Abdourahamane Tchiani agree to advance the construction of the project in February.
