Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a state visit to Russia, following which Putin called for stronger trade ties between the two countries and stressed opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, mining and logistics, The Chanzo reported on June 4. This comes as a Tanzanian lawmaker speaking on condition of anonymity told The Africa Report on June 3 that the Tanzanian government had served a default notice to Russia's state-owned energy company Rosatom regarding its Mkuju River uranium mining project in southern Tanzania prior to Hassan's visit.
Hassan is facing strained relations with Western countries in the aftermath of the country's October 2025 general election, from which leading opposition parties were barred from running and following which security forces killed potentially thousands of opposition demonstrators. Rosatom first acquired an operating stake in the Mkuju River through a subsidiary in 2010, but the project has faced repeated delays due to fluctuations in global uranium prices, infrastructure challenges and environmental concerns.
