Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted a drone and missile attack on June 1, the same day that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had responded to a U.S. attack on an Iranian telecommunications tower, AP reported on June 1. On the same day, the IRGC-linked Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran had suspended discussions with the United States and communications via intermediaries due to ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon; Tehran also called for the full closure of the Strait of Hormuz and for Yemen's Houthi rebels to disrupt shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb strait.

U.S. media sources have reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for edits to the U.S.-Iran MoU, particularly regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of Iran's highly enriched uranium. Meanwhile, Iran has conditioned future nuclear talks on the U.S. release of frozen Iranian funds. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to resume more expansive military strikes if negotiations over the MoU stall or collapse.
