Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum alleged that efforts by U.S. authorities and far-right groups to destabilize her administration have escalated, also questioning whether the United States may try to influence Mexico's 2027 midterm elections, Bloomberg reported on May 31. The comments came during a rally attended by thousands of people at the Monument to the Revolution in central Mexico City.
Sheinbaum's speech referenced a security operation in Chihuahua state on April 19 that involved two CIA agents who died in a vehicular accident in the vicinity of the security operation. The speech also follows U.S. requests for the arrest and extradition of Mexican officials. Sheinbaum's approval levels have steadily dropped over the last two years, falling to 50.7% in an April poll by AtlasIntel.
