Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in France for a state visit that Indonesia's foreign ministry said would conclude with the two countries upgrading ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, the Jakarta Globe reported on May 27. The visit will include meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron focused on defense, the energy transition, critical minerals, transportation, education and trade, with both sides framing the upgrade as a step toward a deeper and broader partnership.

The upgrade would build on the countries' 2011 strategic partnership and Joint Vision 2050 document signed in 2025. Indonesia has become a major buyer of French defense systems, including Rafale fighter jets, while also seeking France's support in accessing the European market. Meanwhile, France has sought to translate its Indo-Pacific strategy into more practical partnerships in Southeast Asia.
