Turkish police entered the Ankara headquarters of the opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP, on May 24 to remove CHP officials — including ousted CHP party leader Ozgur Ozel — and supporters who had barricaded themselves inside to prevent reinstated CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu from entering the building, AP reported the same day. Ozel, along with hundreds of supporters, then marched to Turkey's Grand National Assembly and said the CHP was "de facto shuttered" but called on Turkey to rebuild the party.
Turkish police stormed the CHP headquarters at the request of Kilicdaroglu’s lawyer. On May 21, an appeals court overturned the results of the CHP's 2023 party congress, invalidating the leadership posts of its top officials, including Ozel, and reinstating Kilicdaroglu. Meanwhile, the AKP is waging legal battles against prominent opposition leaders, including Ozel and Imamoglu, in order to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2028 general election.
