Senegal's National Assembly overwhelmingly elected former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko as speaker of parliament with 132 of 133 votes cast after reinstating him as a member of parliament, days after his dismissal from government, Bloomberg reported on May 26. His appointment followed the resignation of the previous parliamentary speaker and returned him to a powerful position despite his fallout with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who appointed economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as the new prime minister to lead a restructured government.

Faye and Sonko rose to power through the PASTEF movement on a shared anti-establishment platform. After Sonko was barred from the 2024 presidential race, he endorsed Faye, who won in March 2024 and appointed him prime minister. However, their alliance subsequently began to fracture and ultimately broke down, worsening from late 2025 amid escalating disputes over party control, IMF-linked economic policy and competing claims to authority.
