The U.S. State Department approved a possible $108.1 million Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for HAWK Missile System Sustainment and related equipment, Reuters reported May 21. The package includes erectable mast trailers, major modifications and maintenance support, spare parts, repair and return support, and U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support for FrankenSAM HAWK missile systems.
The HAWK is a Cold War-era medium-range air defense system, and upgraded variants such as HAWK Phase III can engage fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, cruise missiles and a limited number of tactical ballistic missiles when cued by an adequate 3D source. The FrankenSAM program adapts older Soviet-era and Western air defense components so Kyiv can use available Western missiles and radars more quickly than waiting for entirely new systems. The approval comes as the Iran war has strained U.S. supplies of Patriot PAC interceptors available for Ukraine.
