Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, said that Mozambique has secured funding to sustain the deployment of Rwandan troops in the country's northern Cabo Delgado region, Reuters reported May 19. The announcement follows reports that the European Union is unlikely to extend its financial support for the deployment beyond its scheduled expiration in May.
In 2024, the European Union approved 20 million euros to support Rwandan military operations against the ISMP insurgency in northern Mozambique, including personnel, equipment and logistical assistance. Following March reports that Brussels did not intend to renew the funding, Rwanda threatened to withdraw its 6,300 troops from Cabo Delgado.
