Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19-20 in Beijing, Ria Novosti reported. The two sides adopted a joint statement on strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership and strategic coordination; extended their 2001 Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation; and signed a package of cooperation documents covering trade, science and technology, education, transportation, media, and other areas.

Russia's Gazprom proposed the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline project to China in 2006. The project has gained greater strategic importance now that Russia has lost much of its pipeline gas market in Europe.
