Peruvian election authorities confirmed that right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori and left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez came in first and second in the first round of the April presidential election and will advance to the runoff on June 7, AP reported on May 17. Prior to the announcement, the count showed Sanchez with a slight lead over far-right candidate and former Lima Mayor Rafael Lopez Aliaga.

The first round of Peru's elections on April 12 was chaotic, requiring voting in some areas to be extended to April 13 and an extensive ballot review that delayed the release of results by over a month. Sanchez's second-place win comes after Peru's public prosecutor charged him with campaign finance violations, requesting a sentence of more than five years in prison over inconsistencies in his party's financial reports from 2018 to 2020. Sanchez reportedly received more than $57,000 in unreported contributions, though he has stated there was no fraud or misappropriation. Former President Castillo was impeached and arrested in December 2022 over attempting a self-coup. Fujimori has made it to the runoff elections multiple times but has repeatedly lost to the opposing candidate, likely over broad frustration with her party and her father, former President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of corruption and human rights abuses.
