Saudi Arabia is reportedly discussing a nonaggression pact between Middle Eastern countries and Iran to de-escalate regional tensions after the end of the Iran war, the Financial Times reported on May 14. The report comes a day after U.S. Vice President JD Vance said he felt that U.S.-Iran negotiations were making progress, but acknowledged that the alleged progress might not have sufficient safeguards in place to ensure that Iran would not be able to acquire nuclear weapons.
Saudi Arabia and Iran normalized ties in May 2023, though relations have remained cautious. Since the start of the Iran war, Iran has launched hundreds of drones and missiles against Saudi Arabia. May 12 media reports indicated that Saudi Arabia conducted previously unreported covert strikes against Iran in late March, though these strikes were telegraphed and Saudi Arabia and Iran subsequently reached an understanding to de-escalate. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported on May 14 that a ship had been seized off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and was heading toward Iran.
