Russia carried out one of its heaviest aerial attacks against Ukraine since the war began in 2022, targeting Kyiv and multiple other regions with large waves of drones and missiles, Interfax-Ukraine reported on May 14. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 1,560 drones and fired 56 missiles, killing at least 11 people and, while Ukrainian air defenses intercepted more than 93% of incoming weapons, strikes damaged more than 180 sites nationwide, including over 50 residential buildings.

The barrage likely reflects Russia's use of the May 9-11 ceasefire to accumulate drones and missiles. The United States plans to increase PAC-3 interceptor production under the Army's and Lockheed Martin's announced expansion effort, which aims to raise production from 600 to 2,000 interceptors annually. However, even if this production increase proceeds as planned, it will be a multi-year expansion, not a fix for Ukraine's summer or fall shortages.
