Iraqi officials are seeking financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund to offset the economic toll of the Iran war, Reuters reported on May 14. Initial discussions began at the April IMF spring meeting, and further discussions about the details of a loan program, including its size and structure, are ongoing.

On May 12, Iraq secured an agreement with Iran to export oil and liquefied natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz, but the same day, the U.S. Navy forced an Iraqi oil tanker to turn around. Iraq's last IMF program expired in 2019.
