Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted U.S. President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People for the first day of their two-day summit, where the two had a public banquet and a two-and-a-half-hour, closed-door meeting, according to state news outlet Xinhua on May 14. Xi pushed for a "constructive strategic and stable relationship" and pledged to open up further to U.S. businesses, but he also warned that the issue of Taiwan, if mishandled, could bring China and the United States into conflict.

Trump invited Xi and his wife to visit Washington for a reciprocal visit on Sept. 24. The same day as the summit, China renewed permits for imports from U.S. beef plants, and Reuters sources said the United States agreed to allow U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to sell its most advanced H200 chips to 10 Chinese companies.
