The United Kingdom's Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed to resist a Labour leadership challenge, and he pledged to nationalize British Steel, pursue a new EU deal, and guarantee job or training offers for young people as priorities to relaunch his Labour government following electoral losses, the BBC reported on May 11. Labour lawmaker Catherine West, who on May 9 threatened to launch a leadership bid against Starmer, subsequently softened her position, calling instead for an "orderly transition" and a leadership election in September.

Calls for Starmer's ouster followed stark electoral losses for his Labour Party in the United Kingdom's May 7 local and devolved elections, contested across roughly 5,000 English council seats, six mayoralties and all seats in the Scottish and Welsh parliaments. The party finished third in Wales, made no headway in Scotland and lost over 1,500 English councilors, ceding long-held seats including Sunderland and Barnsley to Reform UK and previously safe London councils such as Lambeth and Hackney to the Greens. Labour's standing has eroded sharply since taking office in July 2024 amid a stagnant economy, tight fiscal room, repeated policy U-turns and recent scandals.
