South Africa's Constitutional Court nullified the National Assembly's December 2022 decision to reject proposals by an investigation panel for a full impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm scandal, News24 reported on May 8. The Constitutional Court ordered an impeachment committee within the National Assembly to process the investigation panel's report.

An investigation panel set up by South Africa's National Assembly, known as a Section 89 panel, found in late 2022 that there was prima facie evidence that Ramaphosa's actions surrounding the 2020 robbery of his Phala Phala game farm amounted to a breach of his oath of office and of anti-corruption legislation, with the panel recommending a full impeachment investigation by parliament. However, the ANC — which then held a parliamentary majority — rejected the panel's recommendations. The far-left Economic Freedom Fighters party contested the decision before the Constitutional Court, which heard the matter in November 2024 but reserved its judgment until now.
