The U.S. Department of State approved a foreign military sale to Ukraine of up to $374 million worth of extended-range Joint Direct Attack Munition kits and related equipment, Bloomberg reported on May 5. The kits convert unguided bombs into GPS-guided munitions capable of striking targets roughly 45 miles (72 kilometers) away.

The Pentagon previously provided similar weapons to Ukraine from U.S. military inventories under presidential drawdown authority in 2022. The newly approved sale is subject to congressional review and final negotiations, and the State Department announcement did not indicate that U.S. funds would be used to cover the purchase. The approval comes as the administration seeks to continue supporting Ukraine while limiting the domestic political costs of another major taxpayer-funded aid package.
