North Korea revised its constitution to remove references to Korean reunification and define North Korean territory as bordering China, Russia and the Republic of Korea, AFP reported on May 6. The changes were likely made at the Workers' Party of Korea Congress in March but have only now become public.
The change follows Kim's 2024 declaration that peaceful reunification was no longer possible and North Korea's October 2024 claim that its constitution had been revised to define South Korea as a hostile foreign state. This revised rhetoric is now part of the state's core legal text.
