Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo announced his appointment of lawyer Gabriel Estuardo Garcia Luna as the new attorney general and head of the Public Prosecutor's Office for the 2026-30 term, InfoBae reported on May 5. Garcia Luna will take office on May 17, and Arevalo said, "He arrives to serve an independent, objective justice system, placed at the service of the Republic and the peoples that make up the Guatemalan nation."

Guatemalan attorney generals serve four-year terms. Porras and her political allies have attempted to legally target Arevalo since he unexpectedly finished second in the first round of Guatemala's 2023 presidential election, before going on to win the presidency. Arevalo ran a campaign promising to combat severe corruption among Guatemala's elites, sparking high tensions with the Public Prosecutor's Office and opposition political parties.
