The Emirati Ministry of Defense said in multiple May 4 statements that the United Arab Emirates' air defense systems were engaging with Iranian missiles and drones, which appear to have caused a fire at an oil facility in Fujairah. Meanwhile, U.S. Adm. Bradley Cooper told reporters that multiple U.S. destroyers had transited the Strait of Hormuz and were operating in the Persian Gulf, adding that Iran had opened fire on U.S. warships and commercial vessels and that the U.S. military had sunk six small Iranian boats that were targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
Iran's attacks on Fujairah were the first in nearly a month against the United Arab Emirates. In an apparent response to the Project Freedom mission and the entrance of U.S. destroyers into the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on May 4 published a new map of the Strait of Hormuz that it says is under its control. The map covers all of the Strait of Hormuz, running from a line connecting the tip of Iran's Qeshm island, the the UAE emirate of Umm al Quwain, the southern portion of the UAE emirate of Fujairah and Iran's Mount Mobarak. This demarcation includes the offshore areas of Fujairah, which was a focal point of Iranian attacks on May 4.
