U.S. President Donald Trump said in a May 1 post on Truth Social that he would increase tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25% "next week" over EU noncompliance with the trade deal the European Union and United States signed in 2025. Trump has not officially implemented the higher tariffs through executive action.

The United States and European Union reached a trade deal lowering tariffs on most EU goods to 15% in July 2025. The European Parliament did not approve the trade deal until March 31, 2026, and did so only with several conditions, including a sunset clause so the deal expires at the end of 2028, a sunrise clause where the deal only goes into effect if the United States holds up its end of the bargain, and a suspension clause that would take effect if the United States raises tariffs on EU goods above 15%. However, the European Council rejected the parliament's amendments on April 22. The next round of EU trilateral negotiations over the agreement is scheduled for May 6.
