Spokesperson for the Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, Michael Asgedom said Tigray Chief Administrator Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede would be making a "mistake" if he remained in power and said his interim regional administration was "collapsing," BBC Amharic reported on April 29. Meanwhile, Tadesse said Tigray's regional council would meet on April 30 and May 1 to elect a new regional president, adding that he would "not enter into an artificial game called 'handover.'"
On April 8, Ethiopia's federal government extended Tadesse's term by one year. The TPLF rejected the move and thereafter called for the reinstatement of Tigray's 2020 state council.
