In a televised address on the evening of April 28, Malian junta leader Assimi Goita said that the situation was "under control" after al Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, or JNIM, and its allies launched sweeping nationwide attacks over the weekend, Radio France International reported. He also thanked Malian security forces for delivering "a decisive blow" to JNIM and praised Mali's "strategic partner," Russia — as well as the Alliance of Sahel States, which regroups Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso — for their ongoing support.
On April 25, JNIM launched coordinated attacks across northern, central and southern Mali, including in and around the capital Bamako. Attacks in northern Mali were launched in coordination with the Tuareg-led Liberation Front of Azawad, or FLA. Goita's April 28 speech was his first public address since the attacks.
