U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend their ceasefire by three weeks after the April 23 White House meeting between Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the United States, AP reported the same day. Even so, the meeting ended with no indication of significant progress toward disarming Hezbollah or reaching a broader agreement to more permanently end the conflict.
This is the second direct meeting of the ambassadors in the past two weeks and the first since the fragile 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah entered into force on April 17. Even so, both Israel and Hezbollah have committed ceasefire violations since it began, and Hezbollah officials previously said they did not recognize the Israel-Lebanon talks. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said prior to the second round of talks that Lebanon would not accept an agreement without full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
