U.S. President Donald Trump announced in an April 19 Truth Social post that the U.S. Navy had fired upon and seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska in the Gulf of Oman after the vessel attempted to break the U.S. blockade of Iran, marking the first U.S. seizure of an Iranian ship since the start of the blockade. Iran reimposed maritime restrictions on April 18, reversing its April 17 claim that the strait was open, due to the U.S. blockade, and has since attacked several vessels attempting to transit the strait.
In response to the U.S. seizure of the Iranian vessel, Iran's military threatened to respond to the "U.S. armed piracy" in a Telegram post. U.S. Vice President JD Vance is once again set to lead the U.S. delegation in talks with Iran, though he had not left for Pakistan by early afternoon on April 20. Additionally, Iran has not confirmed its participation, although Pakistani officials have said Iranian officials have indicated their willingness to send a delegation.
