Romania's Social Democratic Party, or PSD, is set to hold an internal vote on April 20 on whether to withdraw support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, citing his austerity-focused policies and coordination issues within the four-party coalition, Romania Insider reported the same day. Bolojan, a member of the co-ruling National Liberal Party, said he would not resign.

A broad centrist coalition formed in Romania in mid-2025 following a turbulent electoral cycle marred by alleged Russian influence. After an electoral rerun, Dan assumed the presidency, reinforcing Romania's pro-EU and NATO alignment and stabilizing the political environment after months of contestation. Since then, Bolojan's government has prioritized fiscal consolidation under sustained EU pressure. However, despite gradual improvement, the budget deficit remains well above EU thresholds, alongside a large current account gap and elevated sovereign borrowing costs.
