Peru's election authorities announced on April 18 that the results of the first round of Peru's presidential election on April 12 will not be formally announced until mid-May due to the slow vote count and the need to review thousands of records, DW reported on April 19. In response, on April 19, at least 3,000 people protested in Lima in support of far-right candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who has previously alleged fraud against electoral authorities over irregularities during the vote.

The current results show Fujimori leading with 17% of the vote, but it is unclear whether Sanchez or Lopez Aliaga will go to the runoff with her, as they have so far received 12% and 11.9%, respectively, with under 15,000 votes between them. Following election day on April 12, logistical issues led authorities to extend voting for an additional day until April 13. Former President Pedro Castillo previously won the 2021 elections against Fujimori after polling behind her ahead of the first round of the vote.
