Siaya county Gov. James Orengo, a prominent figure within the Linda Mwananchi faction of the Orange Democratic Movement, or ODM, announced at a campaign rally plans to hold protests on June 24-26 to denounce "bad governance" and "make this country ungovernable" to end "this regime [of President William Ruto] now," Daily Nation reported on April 19. Orengo also declared himself acting leader of the ODM after calling party leader Oburu Oginga "incompetent," while Gen Z supporters are set to hold demonstrations on April 21 to denounce rising fuel prices.

The ODM has faced growing divisions since the death of its leader, Raila Odinga, in October 2025. Odinga tilted toward a partnership with Ruto through a series of agreements in mid-2024 and early 2025, with several ODM officials serving within Ruto's Cabinet. However, the party is now divided on whether to partner with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition or run against it, potentially as part of a broad opposition coalition, in the August 2027 general election. The ODM's Linda Mwananchi faction holds a strong anti-Ruto stance.
