Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Brunei and Malaysia to secure refined fuel support and received assurances from both governments that they will prioritize excess fuel exports to Australia and keep essential energy trade flowing, Nikkei Asia reported on April 16. At the same time, a fire hit Australia's Viva Energy Geelong refinery, one of only two refineries left in Australia, disrupting petrol production and thereby increasing reliance on imported replacement cargoes.
Australia reached a similar arrangement with Singapore on April 10. Australia imports roughly 80% of its fuel and has only two operating refineries. Geelong supplies roughly 10% of national demand.
