Russia and Azerbaijan said they had agreed to settle the consequences of the December 2024 crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 near Aktau, Kazakhstan, including compensation payments, and stated the incident resulted from the unintended operation of a Russian air defense system, a joint foreign ministry statement published on April 15 said.

The crash killed 38 people and became a source of tension between Baku and Moscow. On Oct. 9, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where Putin acknowledged that the crash was caused by the unintended operation of a Russian air defense system and said Russia would provide compensation. Azerbaijan had previously called for state compensation from Russia, distinguishing it from insurance payments. The settlement follows months of periodic diplomatic friction, including recent Azerbaijani criticism of Russian statements about Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh exclave.
