Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, where the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in defense procurement, defense industrial cooperation and energy transition work, AFP reported on April 15. France is already one of Indonesia's largest arms suppliers and signed a defense deal with Indonesia in 2025.

Indonesia is simultaneously seeking military modernization and diversified energy access as the Iran war raises oil prices and as intensifying great power competition raises the strategic value of Southeast Asian partners. The visit comes one day after Indonesia deepened energy ties with Russia and signed a defense agreement with the United States.
