The federal congress of South Africa's center-right Democratic Alliance, or DA, elected Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis as the party's federal leader and Solly Msimanga as the party's federal chairperson, Daily Maverick reported on April 12. Following his election, Hill-Lewis stressed his commitment to the DA's participation in South Africa's coalition government and said he would meet with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on April 14.

The DA is the second-largest party in South Africa's coalition government after the ANC. The DA holds a federal congress every three years. South Africa is due to hold municipal elections between November 2026 and February 2027. Polling from the Social Research Foundation conducted in February and March found that 59% of South African voters are "too unfamiliar to express an opinion" about Hill-Lewis.
