The Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, said the Ethiopian government's decision to extend Tigray Chief Administrator Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede's term by one year was made unilaterally, claiming this breached the 2022 Pretoria Agreement that ended the Tigray war, Addis Standard reported on April 9. According to BBC Amharic, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office acknowledged a mistake in referring to a now-repealed regulation to justify the term's extension, but stressed that the move was legal because it was passed in line with a regulation enacted after both parties signed the Pretoria Agreement.
The TPLF insists that the Pretoria Agreement stipulated that Tigray's interim administration should be governed through bilateral dialogue between itself and the federal government. However, Abiy met with Tadesse in Addis Ababa prior to extending his term on April 8. Since taking office in April 2025, Tadesse has attempted to maintain relative neutrality between the TPLF and the federal government while effectively leaning toward the Tigrayan party on a number of key issues surrounding the Pretoria Agreement's implementation.
