The United Kingdom's navy discovered and tracked three Russian submarines attempting to spy on undersea critical infrastructure in the North Atlantic until they departed the area, British Defense Secretary John Healey said during a press conference on April 9, The Guardian reported the same day.
According to Healey's remarks, the United Kingdom's operation involved a Royal Navy warship, a P8 maritime patrol aircraft and 500 naval personnel, which tracked the Russian vessels for more than a month. Healey did not disclose precisely when or where the operation took place, though it was purportedly beyond British territorial waters. Suspected Russian spy vessels have previously been spotted loitering in the vicinity of offshore British critical infrastructure, including wind farms, undersea cables and pipelines. In January 2025, NATO launched an initiative dubbed "Baltic Sentry," which aims to better monitor and prevent threats to undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea from adversarial behavior.
