U.S. President Donald Trump said in an April 8 Truth Social post that any country supplying Iran with "military weapons" would be immediately subject to a 50% tariff, without specifying the authority under which the tariff would be implemented. He also stated that Iran had agreed to many of the 15 points of a U.S.-proposed peace plan, despite having said the previous day that Iran's own 10-point proposal would serve as the basis for negotiations.

Trump announced on April 7 that he was suspending his threatened bombing of Iranian power plants and bridges for two weeks, "subject to [Iran] agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz." Iran has only partially agreed to the U.S. ceasefire, saying that shipping through the strait must be done in coordination with Iran's military and that Iran would collect fees on ships. Indirect U.S.-Iran talks are reportedly scheduled for April 10 in Pakistan.
