U.S. President Donald Trump announced in an April 7 post on Truth Social that he was suspending his threatened bombing of Iranian power plants and bridges by two weeks, "subject to [Iran] agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz." Trump said that this would be a "double-sided ceasefire." He added that the 10-point proposal from Iran was a "workable basis on which to negotiate." Iran's semiofficial Tasnim news agency published a statement by Iran's Supreme National Security Council saying that Pakistani officials had notified Iran that the United States had accepted its proposal as a basis of negotiations and that Iran will negotiate with the United States for two weeks solely on the basis of those points. The SNSC emphasized that the existence of talks does not mean an end to the war and that the war would only end once the principles envisioned in its 10-point plan are agreed upon.
Trump first gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to open transit through the Strait of Hormuz on March 21, then, on March 26, gave Iran another 10-day deadline to open the strait before extending it again. Trump's Truth Social post also does not mention whether Israel has agreed to the ceasefire for either its military campaign in Lebanon or against Iran, nor does it say for certain that the United States will pause other attacks on Iran.
