Iran cut direct communication with the United States hours ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's late April 7 deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though talks through mediators are reportedly ongoing, The Wall Street Journal reported on April 7. The Iranian decision came after Trump's April 7 Truth Social post in which he wrote, "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again."

The United States and Israel struck additional targets between April 6-7, including Sharif University in Tehran, Khorramabad International Airport and transportation infrastructure, including railways and bridges. The U.S. military also struck military targets on Kharg Island, which it had previously struck weeks earlier. Iran has called for citizens to form "human chains" around power plants ahead of the deadline.
