Beijing is investigating Ma Xingrui, a Politburo member and former Party secretary of Xinjiang province, for "serious violations of discipline and law," a euphemism for corruption or political disloyalty, Chinese state news outlet Xinhua announced on April 3. Though a civilian, Ma is closely associated with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., and thus has close ties to the military, which has been the subject of a years-long anti-corruption campaign under President Xi Jinping.
Ma stepped down from his role as Xinjiang Party secretary in July 2025, and he has not been seen in public since October 2025. Fellow Politburo members Zhang Youxia and He Weidong, both generals, were also purged in the last six months. This marks the most purges of a single Politburo since 1977.
