The new Thai government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said it will unilaterally cancel its 2001 maritime boundary memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cambodia, the Bangkok Post reported April 2. The government is also reviewing a similar but separate 2000 land boundary MoU, though no final decision has been announced on that front.

The area in question is a 27,000-square-kilometer section of the Gulf of Thailand claimed by both countries. The 2001 MoU established a framework to manage the dispute and enable joint development of offshore hydrocarbon resources, estimated at 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and large quantities of condensate and oil. But the framework has since produced limited concrete outcomes amid recurring political opposition in Thailand. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia remain elevated following border clashes in 2025.
