Tanzanian authorities announced that gasoline prices would increase from 2,864 Tanzanian shillings ($1.10) per liter to 3,820 Tanzanian shillings per liter starting April 1, The Chanzo reported the same day. This comes as Tanzanian energy officials stressed that the country had sufficient diesel and gasoline stocks in tanks, in transit and under contract for two and three months, respectively.
Tanzanian authorities, like in many other African countries, directly fix fuel prices, and government regulation requires Tanzanian transport operators to submit evidence that their return on investment has fallen below 10% prior to increasing transport fares. The increase in diesel and gasoline prices comes amid already heightened anti-government sentiment following security forces' crackdown on opposition forces after the country's October 2025 general election. According to several reports, this crackdown caused up to 10,000 fatalities, and a government-linked investigation is scheduled to release findings on the matter by April 3.
