U.S. President Donald Trump told aides that he is willing to end the Iran conflict without completely reopening the Strait of Hormuz, in favor of prioritizing U.S. military goals to weaken Iran's navy and significantly reduce its missile arsenal, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 31, citing Trump administration officials. After the war ends, the Trump administration would either rely on U.S. diplomatic pressure on Iran or, if that fails, on a military campaign by European and Gulf countries to fully reopen the strait.

In a March 31 Truth Social post, Trump encouraged European countries not to rely on the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, writing, "You have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won't be there to help you anymore, just like you weren't there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!" Officials from several Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait, have encouraged the United States to continue its military campaign against Iran to further weaken the regime.
