China's Taiwan Affairs Office announced on March 30 that the chair of Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang party, Cheng Li-wun, would visit China from April 7-12 at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. Taiwan Affairs Office Chair Song Tao said his office would communicate with the KMT to make appropriate arrangements for the visit, which will involve stops in Jiangsu, Shanghai and Beijing.

On the campaign trail and since becoming KMT chair in November 2025, Cheng has strongly advocated for reviving China-Taiwan talks under the KMT and for meeting with Xi. The Iran war energy shock is an opportune time for Cheng and Xi to pitch the economic benefits of close ties with China to the Taiwanese people.
