A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction temporarily blocking the Department of Defense from labeling Anthropic, the artificial intelligence lab behind the Claude family of AI models, a supply chain risk, NPR reported on March 26. The supply chain risk designation is usually reserved for companies from adversarial nations and requires defense contractors to certify that they are not using designated companies in their defense department-related workflows.
In her decision, Judge Rita Lin said the "measures appear designed to punish Anthropic." She also blocked federal agencies from implementing U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to cease using Anthropic's AI models. While the government may appeal the injunction in an attempt to overturn it, the judge's order will stand until the court rules on the case.
