Vietnam and Russia signed an agreement to build the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant in Vietnam, with Russia's Rosatom slated to construct reactors with a total capacity of roughly 2,400 megawatts, Bloomberg reported on March 24. The agreement formalizes a project originally awarded to Russia before Vietnam suspended its nuclear program in 2016 and revived it in 2024.
Vietnam's power demand growth, recurring electricity shortages and pressure to reduce coal dependence prompted Hanoi to restart its nuclear program and accelerate negotiations with partners from 2024-25. Russia's role reflects continuity from its original project award.
