Several unnamed Israeli officials have indicated that a potential agreement between the United States and Iran is unlikely, although Pakistan offered to host negotiations as early as late in the week of March 23 to de-escalate the conflict, Reuters reported on March 24. Despite some Iranian denials that negotiations have occurred, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed that messages had been passed through intermediary countries.
If negotiations in Pakistan occur, the U.S. delegation would likely be led by Vice President JD Vance, who is viewed as more skeptical of the Iran war than some other senior U.S. officials, and the Iranian side would likely be led by Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has agreed to allow the U.S. military to use the King Fahd air base after previously prohibiting U.S. forces from using Saudi bases in attacks against Iran.
