U.S. federal prosecutors are conducting at least two separate investigations into Colombian President Gustavo Petro over alleged meetings with drug traffickers and whether his presidential campaign solicited funds from criminals, The New York Times reported on March 20.
The investigations against Petro add to recent reports of U.S. prosecutors looking into other foreign leaders in Latin America. Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro had been indicted for drug trafficking and narcoterrorism by the time of the U.S. military operation that captured and extracted him to the United States on Jan. 3. Earlier in March, media reports indicated that U.S. federal prosecutors were preparing a potential corruption and money laundering indictment against interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez and were investigating top Cuban government and Communist Party officials for alleged crimes, including drug trafficking and immigration violations. Petro met Trump on Feb. 3 at the White House following a year of tense relations.
