Chad plans to deploy 800 police officers and gendarmes to Haiti by June as part of a U.N.-backed international Gang Suppression Force aimed at supporting Haitian authorities against powerful armed gangs, Reuters reported on March 20. The personnel will reportedly first undergo training by European and American partners, although the United States denied claims that they would be trained on U.S. soil.

The broader force is expected to reach 5,500 personnel by October and will gradually replace the earlier Kenya-led mission, which currently constitutes the bulk of deployed forces. About 1,000 Kenyan officers are currently in Haiti, but their mission has faced delays and funding shortfalls, even as gangs have expanded throughout central and rural regions since June 2024. Haitian police, numbering around 12,000, are confronting a similarly sized, heavily armed gang presence that dominates much of Port-au-Prince and surrounding agricultural areas, carrying out widespread violence, kidnappings and destruction.
